New ticket solution

Our new distance based payment solution is based on registration of trips, and you only pay for the journeys you perform. Short trips cost less than long trips, and you get a discount when you travel a lot.

You will find it in the Kolumbus app
Kolumbus has two apps. One with a white symbol that is called Kolumbus Billett (ticket) and is for buying traditional tickets. And one with a dark symbol which is called Kolumbus and is for travel planning, travel guiding and the new ticket solution.

Activate the function
The first time you want to use the solution, you need to activate it. Click on settings, find the payment selection and follow the steps.

Press the payment button before embarking
Press the payment button before embarking, and it turns green with the ticket symbol:

You will then have a ticket valid for embarking a Kolumbus means of transport (see specific list further below). The app will now use the phone’s position to register your trip and charge you for this.

You do not need to press the button as you embark. You can do it well ahead if you wish, but not more than 30 minutes before embarking (if no embarking is registered within 30 minutes, the ticket will be cancelled).

See the proof of travel
Press the button again to see your ticket, add co travellers or to show the ticket in case of a ticket inspection.

The trip is automatically registered
Both embarking and disembarking are registered automatically. You therefore do not need to end the trip, but you are free to do this manually if you wish.

Pressed the button but not travelling after all?
If you press the payment button, but choose not to travel, you pay nothing. The trip is automatically stopped after 30 minutes. You can also stop the trip yourself from the ticket screen.

What does it cost?
The price is based on how far you travel, and long trips cost more than short trips. You get a discount based on how much you have travelled over the past 30 days, and you can see your discount level just above the payment button. The discount (and the accumulation of discount) applies to buses and to line 800 on the express boat. It does not apply to other boats or to trains. You can perform a travel search to see the cost of single trips in advance.

Something else than adult price?
The solution follows approximately the same discount system for different passenger categories as our ordinary tickets do. If you have the right to a discount as for instance a child, a senior or youth, you can change your passenger category under payment in the menu. Read more about discount criteria on our website.

See trips and payments
You can see what your performed trips cost in the menu under Trips history. If you see that the app has wrongly registered a trip, you can correct this here.

Transfer price
If you reembark less than 30 minutes after the last disembarking, this will be counted as a transfer. The cost will be lower than two single trips. This does not apply to return trips, but only if the second leg continues further away from the starting point.

Maximum price guarantee
The payment solution has a maximum price guarantee against regular pre-purchased Columbus tickets. The maximum price guarantee works as follows:

  • You will never pay more for a single journey than it would cost with a regular single ticket.
  • For multiple journeys over a given period of time, the system will make you pay the maximum that a period ticket you could have purchased to take the relevant journeys would have cost - plus 10%.

The maximum price guarantee means that you could occasionally experience an extra large discount or travel for free on some days. This happens when you are approaching the price you would pay if you were traveling with a traditional ticket. The maximum price guarantee applies as described for: Single ticket, 24 hour ticket, 7 day ticket and 30 day ticket in all zones. It applies to U23 tickets (when you have registered as a Youth in Settings). The maximum price guarantee does not apply to kombitickets or boat tickets other than the boats that operate on the Byøyene/Hommersåk line.

Details on calculating the maximum price guarantee
Please note that the maximum price guarantee for season tickets is calculated based on running periods, not calendar months or week numbers. Example: today, the system will check whether the journeys you have made in the last 30 days have reached the price of a 30-day ticket + 10%, and if so, you will travel for free on your next journey. Tomorrow, a new day will be included in the calculation and the “oldest” day will be removed, so that the last 30 days are always used. The same is done for the maximum price guarantee for the other season tickets.

Some things to note:

  • Please note that if you travel in several zones, only the single-zone journeys will be used in the maximum price guarantee for single-zone tickets, while two-zone journeys will be used in the calculation for two-zone tickets.
  • There is no maximum price guarantee for season tickets for fellow passengers you have added.

No discount on the maximum price guarantee
You get an increasing discount the more you travel and you can see your discount percentage above the payment button. But note that you do not get a discount on the maximum price guarantee price. The discount percentage you have only applies to the distance-based full price for the trip.

Example: A long trip within a zone could be more expensive with a distance-based fare (even with a discount) than it would cost with a classic single-zone ticket. Then the maximum price guarantee will kick in so that it still does not become more expensive than it would have been with a single ticket. But you will not get a discount on this maximum price guarantee in addition, as the price will then be the same as a single ticket.

HjemJobbHjem
If you work in a HjemJobbHjem company, you will receive a special discount. For it to work, you need to add your phone number under Payment in the menu.

Co passengers and bikes on board
You can pay for co passengers or bikes from the ticket screen. This is done after you have pressed the payment button for embarking, and you press it once more to access the ticket screen.

Co passengers free of charge evenings and weekends
As with ordinary tickets, you can bring up to three children and one extra adult on your ticket free of charge after 5 pm on weekdays and on weekends, without registering them. This does not apply to other boat routes than Byøyene/Hommersåk.

Vehicles the solution is valid on
The solution can be used on all Kolumbus routes with boat, bus, or train. The solution can not be used on routes from other commercial operators (for instance airport buses, express buses and regional trains). Remember that you must use billetter.kolumbus.no if you want to reserve a seat on the boat.

Account debit
We debit your account the following night after the day you travelled. All the trips performed in one day is gathered in one bank transition.

Receipt
You can receive a receipt via e-mail for both single days and for calendar months under menu – trip history.

City bike
City bikes are unfortunately not yet integrated in the new payment system, and still need to be rented through the Kolumbus ticket app.

Privacy policy
The app stores where you travel, but only locally on your phone. Where you embark and disembark will not be sent to Kolumbus. Read more about out privacy policy under conditions.

Avoid losing your discount
If you add your phone number in the app under Payment in the menu, your discount percentage will be stored by Kolumbus. If you delete the app or lose your phone, you will retrieve your discount by readding your phone number.

Inspection
During a ticket inspection, the inspectors can check when you pressed the payment button, and if that was done after the inspection started, the ticket is not valid. So, remember to press the button before you embark!
